Examinations

General information

In the program Master Marine Geosciences examinations are normally offered at the end of the lecture period. Homework, presentations, reports, etc. may apply throughout the semester. The exact exam dates will be communicated at the beginning of the lecture period and are published in the examination schedule.

Exam types

Each module concludes with a module mark. The module examination may consist of one or more exams (graded) and / or academic achievements (not graded). For details, in particular the number, type and scope of performance records and their weighting in the calculation of the module mark are defined in the module description.

Module Exam:A module is completed with a single examination or coursework. If the exam is graded, the mark counts with 100% for the module grade. Concludes a module with "passed" or "not passed", this module is not included in the calculation of the final Master grade.
Combined Marks: A module examination may conclude with a combination of tests and coursework. Each performance within a combination examination must be passed. The module-grade calculation is up to the module coordinator. Only the module grade is visible in Pabo.
Course marks: The module grade can also consist of partial exams taken in the individual courses within modules. Each partial exam counts for the module grade in the amount of the credit score of its course. Partial exams are visible in Pabo even if the module has not yet been fully completed.

Registration

Only those who have registered for an exam in Pabo by the deadline may take it. Registration and Withdrawal Deadlines for each module or partial exam are listed in the exam schedule (see link under Exam Dates) under “Registration Periods.”
If you are unable to register for an exam — for example, because your module does not appear in Pabo, the module has not yet been made available for registration, or you are experiencing technical issues (see form under forms/application)) — please immediately send an email to the Exam Office (see Contact) and your examiner with a detailed description of your problem and a screenshot from Pabo showing the registration issue. The email must include the following information:

• Full name, student ID number
• VAK number and full name of the module/partial exam
• Name of the instructor
• Reason for not being able to register independently

If your registration problem cannot be resolved by the exam date, this email, with its date of sending, will serve as proof that you attempted to register in a timely manner, i.e., within the registration deadline. Teachers are instructed to deny you participation in exams if you have not registered by the deadline.

In the event of illness, contact the Examinations Office immediately (see Contact) and submit the “Application for Sick Leave” along with a doctor`s note to the Examination Office as soon as possible. An e-mail with the pdf file of the application and medical certificate will also be accepted.

All students who wish to complete a voluntary additional course cannot and should not register for it in Pabo. Please inform your instructors in a timely manner that you wish to take the exam and request a certificate from them after having passed the exam, which you must submit to the examination office.

All minor students, auditors, and visiting students do not have access to Pabo and must register for the exam directly with the instructor well in advance.

Repeat Deadlines

When you first register for an exam, a total period of 5 semesters begins, during which you must successfully complete the entire module or the partial exam. If this period expires without all exam requirements for the module or the partial exam having been successfully met, you risk being automatically withdrawn from your studies. However, approved exam withdrawals, sick leave, and semesters of leave are not counted toward this period.
Within this period, you must register in PABo for each additional exam attempt you wish to take.
