Bachelor Program Geowissenschaften

Past and present geological processes enable and shape our human civilization in many ways: they created the oceans and continents with diverse landscapes, generate soils and groundwater, resources and nutrients, but also earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, droughts and storms. In addition to mineral and fossil resources, our planet provides sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy. Building on sound competences in natural sciences, the Bachelor program `Geowissenschaften` (geosciences) comprises the fundamentals of geology, paleontology, geophysics, geochemistry, petrology, mineralogy and crystallography - always linked to real-world applications and with practical exercises in the field or laboratory, with computers or microscopes. With geoscientific methods, we analyze our living space and devise its sustainable future usage.
Program start: October and April

Standard period of study: 3 years, 180 ECTS CP

Teaching language: German and English

Specifics: internship (at least 4 weeks), field trips (5-7 weeks)

Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Geowissenschaften

Flyer Bachelor Program Geowissenschaften

- University entrance qualification: You need a university entrance qualification, such as the German Abitur, to be able to study.

- VPD (preliminary review document) from uni-assist e.V.: Did you obtain your university entrance qualification outside the EU? If so, you will need a VPD from uni-assist (processing time approx. 6 weeks).

- Language proficiency: German at level C1, study literature and specialization disciplines are widely in English, recommended level: B2

- Enthusiasm for the Earth

- Interest in natural sciences

- Solid basics in mathematics, chemistry and physics

- Good spatial and temporal imagination

- Resilience in partly strenuous fieldwork

- Ability to work independently and in a team

This Bachelor degree program is designed as a three-year fulltime study course. The first two semesters are devoted to the introduction to geoscience and consolidation of the required mathematics, chemistry and physics. The third semester teaches fundamentals of geology, geophysics, petrology and sedimentology along with practical applications. In the fourth through sixth semesters follows a specialization in three of ten electable geoscientific disciplines, supplemented by blocked courses in terrain, digital, and general skills. A four-week professional internship and nine-week Bachelor thesis complete the study program.

Crystalline Materials, Exploration Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geodynamics, Geoinformatics, Hydro- and Engineering Geology, Paleoceanography, Paleontology, Petrology and Mineral Resources, Sedimentology

The interdisciplinary program prepares students for employment in all professional sectors, where geoscientific aspects apply. Geoscientists are in demand particularly in the fields of energy, raw materials, water and environmental studies. Graduates of this study program conduct investigations for environmental protection and planning of infrastructure (e.g. roads, dams, landfills, wind power), explore and extract groundwater, hydrocarbons, ore and building materials, analyze and mitigate contaminated sites, and perform tasks in media and product development, public relations and administration.

The bachelor`s degree is the first professional qualification in geosciences. It is also the main prerequisite to enrol and further qualify in a master`s program.
