8 good reasons to study Geosciences at Bremen University

You have choices!

In our Bachelor's programs, you can choose from 3 out of 7 or 8 minors to create your personal study profile. Afterwards, 3 international master programs in applied, marine or material geosciences are open to you.

You gain practice!

With us, you learn to work professionally with rocks, sediments, fossils, sensors, data and software.
You will develop your skills in scientific writing and presenting, in team and project management.

You learn outdoors!

Field courses, marine surveys and internships train geological thinking better than classroom lectures.
Excursions, field work, training cruises and industrial placements are essentials of your study agenda.

You fathom the sea!

The University of Bremen is the nationwide academic leader in marine environmental research.
No place in Germany is better to fathom the function and dynamics of the sea and the seafloor.

You join research!

A distinctive feature of our faculty is the close exchange between education and top-level research.
As B.Sc. or M.Sc. student you will contribute actively and originally to ongoing georesearch projects.

Anant Khimasia, MSc Marine Geosciences, graduating 2020

Why did you decide to study Marine Geosciences at the University of Bremen?
"I have always been curious about understanding the processes that drive Earth. My bachelor`s programme at the University of Melbourne laid a strong foundation in core aspects of geology. I was keen to further explore how geological processes influence the most pressing concerns of our time such as marine and climatic issues. With links to world-renowned research institutes, and the interdisciplinary nature of the course made it very easy for me to pursue the Marine Geosciences seemed programme at the University of Bremen."

What makes studying Marine Geosciences at the University of Bremen so special?
"One of the standout aspects of the course is the easy access to a range of experts conducting cutting-edge research. It was fascinating to study about techniques and processes that have only recently been fully understood. I was pleasantly surprised by how approachable the researchers and lecturers were. I was fortunate to have met students from all over the world, and formed lifelong friendships along the way. Most importantly, the programme offered several opportunities to explore and pursue my specific interests, geochemistry and spatial analysis. The flexibility to do just that was hugely important in making the programme so special."

We think that as a geoscientist you acquire a broad understanding of natural sciences processes and can analyse interrelationships well. Do you see it the same way?
"Absolutely. We now appreciate that the Earth systems are constantly changing, that systems must be understood over both time and space. A typical geoscientist these days has to understand the physical, chemical and biological processes that influence Earth, be it for mineral exploration, designing civil engineering structures or understanding climate change processes. As a geoscientist, you are often in a unique position where you can take modern natural science processes and apply them to explain events that occurred millions of years ago."

What are you currently doing?
"I currently work as an exploration geologist for a junior gold exploration company in Central Victoria, Australia. We use a combination of fieldwork, geochemistry and drilling to discover new gold deposits."

What are the main skills you learned during your studies which you can apply today in your job?
"I deal with various kinds of historical and modern geological data on a daily basis. My studies, especially the research projects and master`s thesis, developed my critical thinking skills, which allows me to analyse these datasets more effectively. My studies also enhanced my independent research and problem-solving skills, which are extremely useful when I am doing fieldwork in remote regions!"

If you had the choice - would you decide again to study marine geosciences at the University of Bremen?
"Certainly! It was a remarkable experience of exploring different cultures and playing a role in crucial scientific research. Not to forget the fact that Bremen is a lovely city to live in!"

Your final word: What is your recommendation for the new generation of students?
"Enjoy your course and be open to new experiences and people. You never know what drives you until you give it a go!"

You study globally!

About 40% of the students at the department come from abroad, English is the predominant language of instruction and communication. There are 17 partner universities to choose from for a stay abroad.

You`ll be fine!

Our graduates work all over the world, are counted as competent, well equipped and ambitious. Living and studying in the small Hanseatic city of Bremen has many qualities, is socio-culturally and financially attractive.

You are welcome!

What counts is your serious scientific interest in our planet Earth, its past, future and materials. "Diversity" is a matter of course here, you are welcome just as you are!
