Introduction

Field courses are an essential part when studying geosciences. They last one to several days and aim at an in-field-visualisation of the material discussed in lectures. The students get to know rocks and deposits as well as geological and morphological structures. All aspects of geology, geophysics, mineralogy and palaeontology are covered.

During field courses, students also learn to apply specific methods and techniques such as the identification, registration and interpretation of geoscientific data. Furthermore, “geological thinking” in time and space is taught. Another aim is to become acquainted with the regional geology.

Excursions

At least 30 days of field work must be taken in addition to the field exercises, which are a mandatory part of modules in the bachelor's program. Within, 4 days count for the introduction to field work, 3 days for the structural geological field training and 12 days for a mapping course in which a geological map should be created, added by rock sequence- and layer-explanations and completed by regional and detailed profiles. The remaining 12 days are freely selectable from an annually changing field-trip offer (notification each November for the following field season).
