Former Prof. Dr. Martin Olesch

Our research deals with the structural, temporal and petrogenetic evolution of the Earth’s cratonic crust in the recent and ancient polar regions. Our results can be used to explain the geotectonic relations during the amalgamation and break-up of the ancient continents Rodinia (750 Million years), Gondwana (550 Million years) and Pangaea (250 Million years).

Working Area

Continental areas of recent polar regions. Main research field is Antarctica. In addition, ancient polar regions like South Africa with Madagascar and India.

Methods

Petrographic microscopy of magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Analysis of deformation mechanisms and modelling of geothermoand barometric aspects of petrogenesis. Cryomicrothermometric analysis of fluid inclusions in minerals. Fission track dating of apatite, sphene and zircon to form a data base for modelling of the uplift and denudation history of continents during geological times.

Prof. Dr. Martin Olesch
