It´s finally Barbara time! We cordially invite you to spend a wonderful evening in the foyer of the GEO building on Friday, December 5, 2025, starting at 8:00 p.m. For first-year students in our bachelor´s programs, as well as all new master´s students and new employees in the department, the traditional baptism by our patron saint, Saint Barbara, is coming up, by which you will become part of the earth science community. Pour le Mérite Order for Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius
Marine scientist Antje Boetius, a cooperation professor in the College of Geosciences at the University of Bremen, has been awarded the Pour le Mérite Order. Admission to the order is one of the highest honors in Germany for outstanding achievements in the arts and sciences. The Faculty of Geosciences extends its warmest congratulations!

Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen Receives the Weertman Medal
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen as the recipient of the 2026 Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of cryospheric sciences.
The Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal honors scientists who have made exceptional advances in the understanding of ice and snow processes. Named after two pioneers in glaciology and materials science, the medal represents one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field.

New booklet on the geology of Bornholm published
A new 96-page booklet on the geology and palaeontology of the island of Bornholm has recently been published by Quelle & Meyer. The authors, Jochen Kuss (our former colleague) and Jens Lehmann (Geosciences Collection), provide an overview of Bornholm’s fascinating geological history – from the oldest rocks of Scandinavia to the fossils of the Cretaceous period.
