Evolution and Profile of our Faculty

Our Faculty of Earth Sciences has developed steeply and steadily since its founding in 1986: It currently comprises 18 research groups and five predominantly English-language bachelor and master degree programs with applied, marine, and materials science emphases, and thematically covers almost the entire breadth of modern geoscience, emphasizing in climate and ocean dynamics, coastal and sedimentary systems, solid earth and geomaterials, marine geology-geochemistry-geobiology and applied geoscience.

Associated scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven (AWI), the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology Bremen (MPI), the Research Institute Senckenberg am Meer Wilhelmshaven (SaM), the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology Bremen (ZMT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) provide a significant contribution to research and teaching. The MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, funded among others by the Excellence Initiative, emerged from our department and now forms an independent research faculty of the University of Bremen. These partnerships and our own highly qualified teaching staff are a guarantee for a competent, practice-oriented education dealing with state-of-the-art methods and current geo-topics.
