Ms Schmidt studied physics at the Chair of Laser Physics under the supervision of Prof. Peter Hommelhoff at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. After her Master´s thesis, she moved to the Institute of Crystallography and Structural Physics in the research group of Prof. Reinhard Neder for her doctoral thesis, for which she received an outstanding summa cum laude. For her position at the University of Oxford, Ms Schmidt made a courageous move from her Department of Physics to the Department of Chemistry. Such a successful move between different scientific faculties at a very early stage of one´s career underlines the willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary way.
