New Frontiers – Ocean and space

Masterconference 2016

2016-01-27
Autor/in: Prof. Dr. Simone Kasemann

08 - 09 February 2016, 09 am - 06 pm, lecture hall 1550, GEO Building Universität Bremen

Ocean

The Ocean research group will give a series of short presentations, divided into two major topics: "Deep Ocean Mining" and "Sustainability".
Deep Ocean Mining will present you a variety of different, new and exciting avenues for resource exploitation, in the deep sea. It will also highlight the challenges involved, and innovations needed, to mitigate their environmental impact.
The sustainability group will cover a broad spectrum of ambitious projects, intended to supply mankind with cleaner, safer energy sourced from the oceans, and to allow the minimisation, prevention and removal of pollution from our environment.

As a lot of research is going on in the field of gas hydrates we are glad to welcome Prof. Gerhard Bohrmann (University of Bremen) and Dr. Ursula Röhl (MARUM, Bremen University; IODP and BCR coordinator).

Space

After shifting the focus from terrestrial environments to the ocean, moving into space is the next step of pushing the boundaries of geoscientific research. This comprises both applying fundamental geoscientific research methods to other planets of our solar system as well as assessing the future challenges and opportunities of space exploration. During the day, a wide array of topics ranging from sedimentology and extraterrestrial life to exploration techniques and asteroid mining will be covered. Implications for the Earth – especially the oceans – will be referred to throughout.

As guest speakers for the space frontiers we are glad to welcome Marius Wirtz from DFKI ("Deutsches Forschungszentrum für künstliche Intelligenz"; German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence), Marco Scharringhausen from DLR (Deutsche Luft- und Raumfahrtgesellschaft) and Raphaël Lescouzères from the aerospace company OHB System ("Orbitale Hochtechnologie Bremen").
