Relaunch of the FB5 Web Portal in UB Look

Oops, you may have thought, did I accidentally land on the web portal of the University of Bremen? No, it only looks like that, it is your familiar FB5 web portal with all previous pages, content, functions and links, only in a new look, which now imitates the corporate design of the UB in terms of color and style. Try sliding the browser window closer together or opening the website on your smartphone! Wow!

Dr. Michaela Meier is the first of several Bremen alumnae and alumni now active in energy transition to give a presentation on geothermal research and development in Bavaria and Germany as part of our geocolloquium on geoscientists in the energy sector. As project manager of the Geothermal Alliance Bavaria she coordinates a research project of five universities that want to initiate a ´transition to renewable heat supply´ by means of deep geothermal energy in the South German Molasse Basin. This involves improving plant components, exploring regional geothermal potential, safety and acceptance, long-term sustainable energy production, information exchange between numerous regional geothermal projects in Bavaria, and also a new joint-degree master program in GeoThermie/GeoEnergie of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Technical University of Munich.

New QGIS courses complete first Digital Competencies cycle

21 students have already successfully participated in all block courses

True to the motto GEOdigit!, compulsory modules for digital competencies have been established in all geoscience study programs in Bremen since 2021. These are fulfilled through successful participation in a series of certified block courses. Two project-oriented QGIS courses, newly conceptualized by Dr. Antonie Haas and Prof. Elda Miramontes, now completed the first course cycle of the new bachelor degree programs. By now, 21 of the participants have fulfilled the module in just three semesters - and more will do so with Dr. Paul Klar´s equally new PYTHON course in March. The students´ learning drive and success witnessed by all course organizers confirm the promises of the new study concept.

Dr Steven Franke receives the Bremen Study Award 2022

Dr Steven Franke receives the unifreunde study award for his dissertation
"Deciphering past and present ice flow patterns from radar reflections"

with which he received his doctorate in September 2022 in our Faculty of Geosciences. The thematic classification of his dissertation ranges from the application of standard methods to large data sets to the extension of established methods to very innovative approaches. The knowledge gained in it allows us a new view of the dynamics of Greenland ice streams, coupled with new methodology for interpretation. Scientifically, this is a big step forward in our understanding of the movement of ice masses, which is essential for a better estimation of the expected sea level rise, especially in coastal regions, in view of man-made climate change.

The Devil’s Wall in 3D - Contribution from the Department of Geosciences to the project "Germany´s most beautiful geotopes"

On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the German Geological Society and its successor organizations in 2023, geoscientific institutions initiated the 30 Geotope project. The project aims to show that outcrops are primary sources of information in geology and how these can be documented using modern methods. The University of Bremen is participating and, in addition to the Piesberg, now also the Devil’s Wall at Königstein was presented. After the drone measurement last year, the approximately 2,000 drone images were combined into a 3D model. The model has been available since mid-January together with an explanatory text on the formation of the Devil’s wall and a video on the platform Digital Geology – Deutschlands schönste Geotope in 3D.
